Assalamualaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatu hu,
Lote Tree Trust has made the decision to put the New Zealand Muslim Leadership Collective programme on hold for the foreseeable future. This was a difficult decision to make however we remain committed to supporting initiatives that grow the leadership capacity of New Zealand Muslims.
We are still available to assist in projects and programmes that support this Kaupapa. If you would like to request our support, please contact us at admin@lotetree.nz
Nurturing Muslim Leadership in
New Zealand
For All of Us
We aim to build the capacity of emerging Muslim leaders working in their communities through events, programmes and professional development.
About The Collective
The New Zealand Muslim Leadership Collective is a new initiative. We aim to build the capacity of emerging Muslim leaders working in their communities through events, programmes and professional development opportunities.
The collective is an initiative of The Lote Tree Trust, a charitable trust based in Auckland, New Zealand. Find out more about Lote Tree.
The initiative is being overseen by a small working group of community workers across New Zealand from different organisations. As the initiative develops we are looking at ways to allow for wider membership.
Our first event is the Muslim Leadership Wānanga, the official launch of this initiative.

Our Objectives
Connect
Grassroots leadership in the Muslim community.
Develop
An Islamic Model of community-led development.
Grow
A skilled cohort of capable leaders.
Empower
Confident Muslim communities across New Zealand.
We Have the Power to Impact Our Future, and We’re Doing Something About It
There are many initiatives, groups and organisations serving the Muslim community around New Zealand. All of these initiatives have good intentions and are successful in their own ways. However, within all of these groups there is a lack of capacity.
Working Together
Every group has been developing through our own experimentation. To become more effective we need a more deliberate approach to build our capacity and improve our approaches to community development. We realise that there is a lot of learning to be done, and that it is best done together, with people that are going through the same challenges and exploring the same opportunities as us.

Why is a Collective Needed?
There are many initiatives, groups and organisations serving the Muslim community around New Zealand. All of these initiatives have good intentions and are successful in their own ways. However, within all of these groups there is a lack of capacity.
Every group has been developing through their own experimentation. To become more effective we need a more deliberate approach to build our capacity and improve our approaches to community development. We realise that there is a lot of learning to be done, and that it is best done together, with people that are going through the same challenges and exploring the same opportunities as us.
March 15 was a galvanising moment for young people in the Muslim community. We realised that we had to step up. Many young people came together in the immediate aftermath of the mosque attacks, actively volunteering and leading activities on the ground to get things done. We now realise that our independent initiatives and organisations need to increase our efforts, supporting Muslims in New Zealand to build an authentic community, in a way that reflects the realities of living in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We want to take the experience of March 15 and its aftermath to bring together a cohort of emerging community focused leaders, to further support the development of thriving, empowered Muslim communities in New Zealand.
